No doubt the nose is one of the face's
most prominent features and the one a good number of men and women
would most like to change. If you are unhappy with your nose, you can
transform it with nasal surgery called rhinoplasty. If breathing is a
problem, rhinoplasty can be combined with septoplasty to correct the
interior chambers of your nose to effectively restore the capacity to
breathe freely. So whether you want to change your profile or breathe
more easily, nasal surgery's modern techniques permit you to have safe
and dramatic results.
As a rule, patients are interested in
changing the profile, the width, the tip, or the nostrils' shape. All
of these can be tended to with rhinoplasty. In addition to taking out
undesirable bumps, Dr. Karlin can make the nose more diminutive or
larger, more narrow, shorter, or longer, or more symmetrical to your
face. The goal is to give you a natural-looking nose that is well
suited to your face and more aesthetically pleasing.
Most commonly the surgery is performed
through tiny incisions made just inside the nostrils. Operating
through these incisions, Dr. Karlin can reshape and redefine the nose
by sculpting the bones and cartilage -- perhaps reducing some areas
while building up others with your own cartilage and bones or other
approved materials. A personal consultation with
Dr. Karlin will help
determine which technique will be best for you, depending on your
natural structure and desired result.

FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS |
How is
Rhinoplasty Performed?
Rhinoplasty
(Nose Surgery) usually takes two to
three hours, although complicated procedures may take
longer. During the surgery the skin of the nose is
separated from its supporting framework of bone and
cartilage, which is then sculpted to the desired shape.
The nature of the sculpting will depend on your problem
and the operative plan. Finally, the skin is re-draped
over the new framework. Tiny sutures are used to close
the skin and a post-operative splint is applied.
What are the risks of having
Rhinoplasty?
Any surgical procedure comes with
inherent risks, such as the effects of anesthesia,
infection, bleeding, swelling and discomfort.
Dr. Karlin will discuss these and other possible
complications thoroughly with you during your
consultation.
How long is the recovery period?
Some bruising and swelling is
expected for the first few weeks. An external dressing
(splint) will be worn the first week following your
procedure. Once removed, camouflage makeup can be
applied. You can usually return to work about ten days
following surgery. Over the next several months, there
will be a subtle but ongoing natural remodeling process
as your nose becomes more sculpted and refined.
What type of anesthesia is used?
Rhinoplasty is performed under
general anesthesia. With general anesthesia, you will
sleep through the operation.
