For some years now, liposuction has been one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Academy of Dermatology, thousands of men and women take control of their shape each year with this safe and effective cosmetic procedure. If diet and exercise have failed to reduce areas of unwanted fat, then liposuction may provide the help you want. The procedure is designed to improve body shape and remove unwanted fat from areas such as the face and neck, upper arms, abdomen, thighs, buttocks, hips, knees, calves, ankles and male breasts. Liposuction is not a substitute for dieting and exercising properly, and it is not a weight loss procedure. It is extremely effective in removing fat in areas that just do not respond to traditional weight reduction methods.

The Procedure

Liposuction, also known as liposculpture, lipoplasty and suction lipectomy, is the removal of unwanted fat from specific areas of the body. Using a straw-like tube called a cannula, the fat is suctioned out of the body. Since the body does not create new fat cells, this area is forever free of those specific fat cells. Incisions are strategically placed to be as inconspicuous as possible. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss, but rather, a way to change what heredity may have given you in regard to your proportion. Several variations of the process exist, and by assessing your health, features, and the desired result, Dr. Karlin will decide which technique is best for you.

Liposuction is a safe procedure as long as patients are carefully selected, the operating facility is properly equipped, and the physician is adequately trained.  Be aware that all surgery does carry some degree of risk.  Dr. Karlin will go over all the possible risks and complications with you during your liposuction consultation.

After liposuction, a compression garment should be worn for 4-6 weeks to minimize swelling and to help your skin tighten around your new, slimmer figure.  Healing is gradual, but you will begin to see a noticeable difference in your body shortly after surgery.  How quickly you are able to resume normal activities will depend on the amount of liposuction that is performed and your individual body type.

Once the fat is removed, it should not come back.  However, liposuction will not prevent you from gaining weight due to an unhealthy lifestyle.  Make sure you eat healthy and exercise regularly to maintain your new figure.

Various types of anesthesia can be used for liposuction procedures.  Together, you and Dr. Karlin will select the type of anesthesia that provides the most safe and effective level of comfort for your surgery. If only a small amount of fat and a limited number of body sites are involved, liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia, which numbs only the affected areas.  Most patients prefer general anesthesia, particularly if a large volume of fat is being removed.
